Credits: 4 Credit (ANT 3025) Spring Semester course with travel in Ecuador
Instructors: Scotti Norman (Assistant Professor of Material Culture and Archaeology) and Eric Griffin (Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies)
Travel Dates: Two weeks in May following Commencement
This course provides a solid foundation in the archaeology and tropical ecology of Ecuador. It prepares students to better understand the history of peoples and ecological interactions of plants and animals (e.g., people and place) and to engage in the challenges facing Neotropical forests and their people. Students will compare pristine to altered forests, identifying key factors in forest decline and regeneration and seeing the effects of elevational gradients on plant and animal communities. Students will visit ruin sites as well as a Theobroma cacao farm to discuss the process and importance of this crop to local communities and to understand the interface of people with landscape.
